The War on Iraq/Terror

After 9-11, Iraq became a warzone. Was it the right choice? Should we withdraw? Should we ’stay the course’ or ‘cut and run’?

Yes I think it was a good choice if we “cut and run” then the al quada will be able to regroup and strike again

what I’m saying is I think it was a good chioce to attack Iraq and afganistan

Unless we’ve destroyed al Queda, which, may I add, we dont even now for sure if it was them. I say lets retreat. We’ve already killed over 600,000 civlians and crippled the economy. I’m not saying Sadam was a good leader, but Iraq is becoming a conqured nation of the US. And again the constant questions: Where in the nine hells are the WMDs? Where is Osama? When will we stop killing?
I think the war was a power-grabbing move by the US and was a terrible, and destructive choice.

First of all why would we want Iraq Marlowe. What are you trying to say? That US is a bad country that we did a bad thing killing terriost? After they killed 3000+ of our people for no reason. Osama tapes give us good evidence that he was the one who planned it by saying things lke”Death to America” “America is the devil”. So I say we we go and find him and all of his little fallowers and KILL THEM ALL!

  5. york8 said,

    October 24, 2006 at 8:35 am

Ok. To me we should have been out of Iraq a year ago. I mena i don’t want Al Quida to kill off everybody but now the soldiers are there and are getting into personal stuff that the Iraq’s need to deal with. WE have done our part so lets get out.

I think the invasion never should have happend! It was a plan! Did you know the our good president, George W. Bush, knew about the 9-11 planes over an hour before they hit? And he did jack. Some guy, huh? As for the 3000 dead American yes its sad and very tragic, it doesnt warrent the death of 600,000 people!

I think we should stop this war because eventually we will lose the war if we keep this up. Also, the president told the world that there were weapons of mass destruction and there were no weapons of mass destruction. We know that North Korea has nuclear bombs, and yet we are not putting any of our soldiers to invade North Korea?

Think about this, the US and Iraq are to big cells that are always going after each other and it will never end I am say the Iraq war will never end evenly when the physical aspect of it is over.It will still go on mentaly.

  9. Elizabeth said,

If we back out of the war now then it will show that we are weak and then we will get attacked again.

  10. Caitlin said,

Marlowe, although I completely agree with everything stated above, your Iraqi death count numbers were off a bit. The actual death count is 44,661 to 49,610 Iraqis, according to http://www.iraqbodycount.org. Also, keep in mind, people from Iraq didn’t cause 9/11.

  11. John said,

I truly agree with elizabeth if wepull put then we will get attacked agian, and yes I DO think Saddam and Osama were friends.

    1. Start extensive serveillience
    2. Send in ghost/specailly train soliders
    3.position them in key areas.
    4. Will sniper rifles, kill all the leaders at once.
    5. Evacuate the civillians
    6. After crippling the Terrorists, I would with draw, because it would take year or decade for them to reform. Minnimal loss of life, maxium affect.

I think we should definately leave. First of all, the government and the media try to imply that Iraq was involved in 9/11, that is completely UNTRUE, I do believe that it was a good decision to remove Sadam from power, but then we should have left and let the country sink or swim by their own will, I think it’s clear now that Iraq will self-destruct, a country at war with it’s self can not stand, all we are doing is killing our own troops for a lost cause. We are wasting money and lives, think of the great things that those who died in Iraq could have done, Cures for cancer? World peace? Who knows. As Edward R. Murrow said, “you can not fight for freedom abroad while abandoning it at home.”

‘Ben larden’, Bin Laden, does it really matter? I don’t think we should have invaded Iraq. The United State government should prioritize more. Should we invade the place where there are fake, imaginary weapons, and a corrupt government(Iraq.), or the place where the government wants to blow us up that actually has weapons to blow us up(North Korea)? Yeah, I’m guessing you didn’t answer we should invade Iraq.

I think the war in Iraq pretty much ruined America not helped it. Do you seriously think we’re any safer because of the war? The reality has hit us and Bush is still denying that the war in Iraq is a complete disaster. We can’t just pull out now because all the billions of dollars that went to the war would have been a complete waste. What the US needs is a good leader that can get us out of this sticky situation. And Myles, if i ran this country and 9/11 happened I would use my brain not “listen to what God was telling me” as Bush did. There is nothing in Iraq and there never was. We havent helped anyone and we probably wont. We are just wasting money that could have gone to education and such.

Guys I emailed thsi to Dick Cheney, comments please:
    Dear Vice-President Cheney,

I am an 8Th grader, and a Democrat. In fact I’m so far left I have no idea where the middle is. I have made some observations and thing s that could be improved in our great country.
The war in Iraq was a sham, and we both know it. True Al-Queda was a potential threat, and Sadam was a terrible person, but with the civilian death tole over 50,000, our own troops dying and the war pushing us into the greatest deficit ever accrued by man, It has gone far enough. We never should have invaded in the first place, unless diplomacy and planning had all be exhausted. Besides, it was clumsily executed. If I was general it would have been simple and virtually blood-free, but of course I wouldn’t have had a war in the first place. Also from some various sources I heard there were a few hours waring before 9 -11, please elaborate.
Guns. There is no gun control. The NRA is an excuse for people to arm themselves legally. It supports hunting, which is a terrible crime, and is for sport not even for food. We should have more control over weaponry. Particularly in you case.
Gay rights. I have a gay uncle, and you and your administration prevent him for finding love. You make it near impossible for homosexuals to be married and you cause no end of humiliation for them. It is despicable to treat another human so. Much less your own daughter, Vice President.
Abortion. How in the world we occupy is it your, or your god’s, decision of what a woman can and cannot do with her body. This is a fascistic decision, and removes woman’s right and control over their well being.

Please consider these and write back. I look forward to a debate.

I dis agree with the part about hunting being only for sport. I don’t hunt but i know if I did than it would save me a lot of money on food. And some peolple need that money to be saved.

  124. Malinka said,

Kyle, hunting wouldn’t save you money. You have to buy a gun and all the other proper equipment and that’s definetly not cheap. And I really like the letter that someone wrote and I hope that Chaney doesnt ignore it. But he probably will because it’s kind of embarrasing for an eighth grader to be wayyyyy smarter than the vice president.

Listen to you people; you are all pro life lets give people a chance, yet when you are given a chance to watch someone be killed by the government you’re all for it. I find it sickening that you would want to see a killing that will make it so that there is more violence (some Iraqis will want to get revenge) for the United States troops to deal with. I love the pro life, yet pro killing position. It is quite hipocritical.

  132. nick said,

i am willing to stay the course as long as it takes

  133. Barb said,

    November 27, 2006 at 2:54 pm

How many lives would you be willing to have taken? I’m sorry, I guess I’m biased because my cousin is risking his life for something that, if you ask me, wasn’t thought out well at all.

  134. Graehme said,

    November 27, 2006 at 3:22 pm

I completely agree with Caitlin. Supporting life in some circumstances and death in others is the pure hipocracy. The facts are that Iraq will fall as soon as we are no longer there to support it. So why waste life for a lost cause? Try to think what the hundreds who die in Iraq every day could have accomplished in the future

  135. Elizabeth said,

    November 28, 2006 at 11:01 am

Did you know that more then 85% of the Iraqis acctually want us to stay in Iraq longer. The Iraqis don’t even belive that the job is done there yet.

  136. york8 said,

    November 28, 2006 at 11:41 am

And let me guess, you’re getting that statistic form Fox News, The most publicly right wing biased news.

  137. Barb said,

    November 29, 2006 at 9:29 am

True, true. I know that many people that are in Iraq want to, though marlowe is right as well.
BUT, if you ask me, it isn’t fair that great people are risking their lives for a reason that the president won’t directly answer! Bush won’t say why he’s still in Iraq, and it ticks me off that people are still there.

  138. york8 said,

    November 29, 2006 at 9:38 am

Well he has. Its to get ”the mission accomplished” and to fight “The War on Terror” and to show how America is going to “Stay the course” and not “Cut and run” And all of those mean nothing.

The election was won with 3 presidential buzzphrases: “Stay the Course, War on Terror, Mission Accopmplished” Yeah We’ve got to “stay the Course” to win the “War onTerror” so the “Mission is Accomplished”….

John I pretty much dissagree with all of your comments. We are deffinetly losing the war. We are spending unnessesary money, killing thousands of innocent people and still getting no where. There was nothing in Iraq in the first place. There is more chaos in Iraq now than before we invaded, everyone wants us out. Besides maybe the few people that got payed to make that video that John gave us a link to. If this war is about safety than the way we’re going to be safest is by having the army in our country protecting us and not in Iraq getting killed. Bush had no plan going into Iraq, he is in the worse possition any US president has ever been in, his ratings are down the drain and he’s still not taking any responsiblity.

I understand how you’d support it because of your cousin. My cousin is in Iraq as well. But don’t you think that blindly agreeing with a leader is dangerous?
If you don’t express your beliefs, than theres no point in being patriotic.

  186. york8 said,

    December 14, 2006 at 9:24 am

I think that the best way to look out for our troops best interests is to evaluate the war and make sure that it is really worthwhile and in our countries best interests whether we should pull out or not. The democracy in America is not there so that we can blindly agree (or, for that matter, disagree) with our leaders.

Wow, I’m impressed at how strongly you guys feel about your opinions. I remember when this blog was started a few years ago, and I’m glad to see that you guys have kept this going. I just wanted to point a few things out:
First, It’s easy to look at this war in Iraq from an outsider’s point of view and criticize it and say we’re not helping at all, but I’ve talked to several people who have been deployed over there, and always say how much we’re improving their life. Keep in mind that some news stations have a political slant to them, so don’t always go by what you here in the news.
Second, 9/11 was not related to the Iraq war, President Bush has admitted that. 9/11 was the reason that we invaded Afghanistan.
Third, if we wanted oil, there are many other countries that we could have invaded for oil, in fact, much more oil. If we wanted oil, we could have gone to Saudi Arabia, as their government loves us, we could have gone to Africa, oil isn’t only found in the middle east.
Fourth, many of you have referenced the number of civilians who have been killed, and I would like to clarify a few things surrounding that. Yes, civilians have died, but collateral damage is an unavoidable part of war. Also, the reason that the civilian death toll is so high is that insurgent attacks often specifically target highly populated areas. Also, a lot of the resistance that we encounter all over the middle east are simply religious extremists. They believe that their religion is right, and that everybody else should die. So, they run into the street firing an AK-47 wildly at a convoy and get shot, or fire an RPG at an APC(Armored Personnel Carrier), or detonate an IED next to a convoy of HMMWV’s (Humvees).
