Flag Burning
In the court case, Texas v. Johnson the Supreme Court declared flag burning to be legal. Now the decision has come under heavy assault from the current administration. What do you think? Should people be allowed to burn the American Flag, if its their own proprety and if its to express something, or do you think that flag burning should be outlawed.
Tristan said,

I think yes, people should be allowed to burn our flag. I, personally, am against it. However, who am I to say otherwise?
As long as the flag is their property, I think someone should be allowed to burn our flag.

i think that people should certainly be able to burn the flag. for one thing, its free speech, which is protected, and second, its just a cloth on a stick! i mean come on, why does a certain symbol deserve so much attention and protection! if you ask me, its kinda silly.
Ezra said,
October 17, 2006 at 12:21 pm
not that I think its wrong, but the reason other people dont like it is beacause it is like amearica to them not just a piece of cloth on a stick.
Max said,

I agree with you Dan, but the american flag is a symbol for the United States of America. It stands for freedom just like religous symbols stand for whatever that religion believes in. It makes sense for people to be outraged at people burning the flag, remember how people reacted to a comic with the Prophet Muhammed in it. It’s good people can burn the flag if they want to, but it’s not just cloth on a stick.
JEnni said,

i think that the burning of the flag should only be able to be burned if it touches the ground or if you hate america with a passion i dout that someone hates america that much and one place that they can but shouldn’t is in a graveyard
Matt said,
October 17, 2006 at 12:29 pm
I believe burning the American flag is wrong. I think no one should burn the flag, just to show a little respect for your country and the people who may be offended. Unfortunately, it is an act of free speech and is protected under the First Amendment. I defnitely do not encourage it, but anyone and everyone has the right. But please, ask yourself two things before you go torch the flag. First, if you dislike this country, or some of its laws, why are you here? Second, is there anything near you with the label: “caution, highly flammable”?
Emma said,
October 17, 2006 at 2:17 pm
Nice Matt.
I look at it this way. If America is offended when a symbol, that has been mass produced and sold in billions of stores, and more are being made every day, and they are making prophet from your “Patriotism,” then it’s pretty sad.
If you buy it, then you can do what ever you want with it. You can burn it, or frame it, what ever your heart desires. No one has the right to keep you from expressing yourself.
Burn away, my kitties.

I believe burning the American flag is wrong and should be protected because the flag represents our democracy, freedom and liberty. And I think that other religious symbols should be also protected as well because it show each countries beliefs and if we burned like the Koran it wouldn’t mean much to Americans, but would mean al lot to other people. Just as we believe in the American flag. Also if we start burning other religious symbols like the Bible, the Star of David, or the Koran it would start bringing violence or will bring chaos all over the world!!!!

I agree with Nick. The flag represents America. And if you burn it you CLEARLY hate America. People in this country take everything for granted. Yes we do have Freedom of Speech/Expression and what do people do with that Freedom they go and burn the American flag. People need to learn how to respect their country. The flag stands for everything that this country has stood for over the past 230 years. Think about it the stripes stand for the 13 original colonies and the stars represnt the 50 states. If you burn the flag you burn all those things.
pete said,
October 20, 2006 at 9:55 am
I believe that flag burning should be illegal and should not be protected by freedom of speech. The only time anyone should ever burn the flag is when the flag is dropped to the ground, by accident! The U.S flag is a piec of america and should not be destroyed as a result of freedom of speech. Another thing is, that when you burn the flag it is not talking it is burning which is not speech and you should not be aloud to do it.

Alright guys. I am thrilled that we are now all obsessed with spelling but please, this is a blog not an english class. What exactly is the definition of “Patriotic” any ways? Loving America? Supporting it? How can we really tell what is patriotic and what’s not?
patriotic |ˌpātrēˈätik| adjective having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country :
Is that for everything in the country, I wonder…
If you’re patriotic, do you have to support everything?
york8 said,

Dictionary
patriotic |ˌpātrēˈätik| adjective having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country : the wave of relief and patriotic euphoria that followed the president’s cease-fire declaration. DERIVATIVES patriotically |-(ə)lē| adverb ORIGIN mid 17th cent.: via late Latin from Greek patriōtikos ‘relating to a fellow countryman’ (see patriot ).
My one:
Patriotic: Caring for a country, not its leaders or its symbols, but for the well being of a Country as a whole.

I think that flag burning should not be legal. One reason is that it is our national symbol. It represents our freedom, our fallen soldiers, and our country. When you burn the flag it is sooooo disrespectful. It is like a slap in the face for for all the veterens that faught for our freedom. If you hate america so much that you want to burn the flag why don’t you move. If you really feel the need to burn the flag go to the boarder of Mexico or Canada and do it, don’t do it in our country!

The flag represents America-that’s why it is ok ot burn it. If you feel the need to burn the flag and don’t casue a riot then it is totally fine. WEll nad of coursee if it is your property

I believe that burning the American flag is wrong but should not be against the law. Everyone should be allowed freedom of speech and if this is the way that they are deciding to do it and express their opinions then they should be allowed. The only way that burning the American flag should not be allowed is if it is going to start a riot and people are going to get hurt but other then that it should not be against the law since this is a way that people are expressing their opinions.

ok i cant belive this but i agree yeah it very important to our contry but it is kinda…”silly” to fret over one flag, how come nobodys freting over the gay flag or anything else?

Dani said,
October 26, 2006 at 9:18 am
but john the swastika was origanally a symbol of peace in the asia area but hitler flipped it around so we automaticly think hitler.
maybe to some countries whne they see our flag they think evil.

Here’s a bit of useless history:
Originally, the swastika was called the manji, and it could be seen on Buddha’s hands, feet, and stomach. It meant peace, love and enlightenment. Google manji for a good picture. It looked like a swastika, only it was in a sqaure shape instead of a diamond.
It could point either way. Hitler and the Nazis then took it and reversed it and it’s meaning. (Literally and figuratively.)

Canada rocks!!!!!!!!!
But ok—–The swastika (sp?) is just as bad as burning a flag. If you go to germany nad go to some persons house that suports the Nazi’s and leave a burning swastika (sp?) on thier doorstep, it’s no dofferent than leaving a burning flag on someones doorstep. So what im saying is that burn your own flag yeah fine, burn your own flag but leave it on someones doorstep-very wrong.

ok well if you leave a buring anything on someones door step then their house can catch fire and then you will get yelled at for burning and flag and get put in jail for killing someone!

Dani said,

so i could go and draw a swastika on my hand and say oh it menas evil??
it deosnt work that way!!
Max B said,
October 26, 2006 at 12:28 pm
Also there is a difference betwwen burning the flag in your backyard and going up to somone’s house, who you know is very pro-american, and burning a flag.
york8 said,
October 26, 2006 at 12:28 pm
Actully the buring of a falg on someone elses proprety is illegal, so youed go to jail anyway. And a buring flag, probably wouldent get hot enough to burn down a house.

October 27, 2006 at 9:02 am
MEANIES!
Obviously, I hate the swastika, but we can’t point fingers on what’s sacred and not, you know what i mean, guys?
Dani said,
October 27, 2006 at 10:50 am
i know that the swastika does make you thnk if evil, but still it is a symbol and should be treated just as any other!
gah.
John said,
October 27, 2006 at 11:05 am
no it shouldent becuase it is EVIL and even the NAZI’S know that
Andrew said,
October 27, 2006 at 11:06 am
OK I hate the swastika. But it’s not differnet. America has made many people suffer. Look at out history—slaves, women, and even now–families that have people over seas and we are keeping them over there. So burning a swastika is the same as burning a flag.
Andrew said,
October 27, 2006 at 11:07 am
Right on Dani-if you can burn one symbol, then you should be able to burn another.
