Flag Burning

In the court case, Texas v. Johnson the Supreme Court declared flag burning to be legal. Now the decision has come under heavy assault from the current administration. What do you think? Should people be allowed to burn the American Flag, if its their own proprety and if its to express something, or do you think that flag burning should be outlawed.

I think yes, people should be allowed to burn our flag. I, personally, am against it. However, who am I to say otherwise?
As long as the flag is their property, I think someone should be allowed to burn our flag.

  2. Dan said,

i think that people should certainly be able to burn the flag. for one thing, its free speech, which is protected, and second, its just a cloth on a stick! i mean come on, why does a certain symbol deserve so much attention and protection! if you ask me, its kinda silly.

  3. Ezra said,

not that I think its wrong, but the reason other people dont like it is beacause it is like amearica to them not just a piece of cloth on a stick.

  4. Max said,

I agree with you Dan, but the american flag is a symbol for the United States of America. It stands for freedom just like religous symbols stand for whatever that religion believes in. It makes sense for people to be outraged at people burning the flag, remember how people reacted to a comic with the Prophet Muhammed in it. It’s good people can burn the flag if they want to, but it’s not just cloth on a stick.

  5. JEnni said,

i think that the burning of the flag should only be able to be burned if it touches the ground or if you hate america with a passion i dout that someone hates america that much and one place that they can but shouldn’t is in a graveyard

  6. Matt said,

I believe burning the American flag is wrong. I think no one should burn the flag, just to show a little respect for your country and the people who may be offended. Unfortunately, it is an act of free speech and is protected under the First Amendment. I defnitely do not encourage it, but anyone and everyone has the right. But please, ask yourself two things before you go torch the flag. First, if you dislike this country, or some of its laws, why are you here? Second, is there anything near you with the label: “caution, highly flammable”?

  7. Emma said,

    Nice Matt.

I look at it this way. If America is offended when a symbol, that has been mass produced and sold in billions of stores, and more are being made every day, and they are making prophet from your “Patriotism,” then it’s pretty sad.

If you buy it, then you can do what ever you want with it. You can burn it, or frame it, what ever your heart desires. No one has the right to keep you from expressing yourself.

    Burn away, my kitties.

I think that what he is saying is complete and total trash! He first says that he thinks that flag burning is okay, than says that he is against it. Get your thoughts straight!

I personally think that burning of an american flag is perfectly okay aslong as its your own flag and solong as it won’t start a riot.

  9. Thao said,

I agree with Max what he said.

  10. Max said,

Jenni, what do you mean the flag must be touching the ground? Also people do hate America enough to burn the flag, but it’s not always about hating America. Some people hate what America stands for and are the destroying it as a symbol.

  11. york8 said,

What I meant, Isaac it that I don’t think it’s good to burn the flag, but if I see someone burning it, I won’t stop them.

    -Tristan

  12. Thao said,

I agree with tristain because if I seeing someone burning the american flag i won’t stop them too

  13. Emma said,

Yeah, like Max said, Jenni, some people really do hate America.

  14. Marlowe said,

I say, light ‘em up. Its a symbol! And sure its all patriotic and stuff, but really! America has destroyed and desecrated symbols for all time. So why should we care about this one symbol after we ourselves break others? So let it burn, and wave the burning flag of ‘freedom’

  15. york8 said,

If you wave a burning flag, sparks will come out and catch fire on stuff, and you’ll cause a fire. I don’t advise waving burning things.:)

Flag burning is freedom of speach but if peoole hate America enough to burn the flag they should move to another country.

  21. Dani said,

gah well i think that you CAN be for both sides i am, and yes it seems hypocritical but i can help what i think

and also what i think is that we need to be a little less insulting

    just a thought

  22. Dan said,

Its kinda silly, we burn other symbols and items of worship, but when it concerns us, then all of a sudden it’s NO DON’T BURN THAT! IT’S A NATIONAL SYMBOL! thats just bizzare

  23. york8 said,

Very true. Plus its not that flag-burners hate america, no thats something a brain-washed media junkie might say, its that they are protesting the current administration and its dicisions.

    ~Marlowe

  24. nick said,

i hate it people could even think of burning the flag…but Dan is right it is just a piece of cloth on a stick…. But what does that piece of cloth on a stick represent??? give up it represents America…freedom…rights…. and most importantly it represents all that live in America down to the poorest person. So go ahead burn the flag BUT KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU BURN THE FLAG YOU SHOULD GO AHEAD AND SPIT ON EVERY ONE THAT LIVES IN AMERICA TO CAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOUR DOING just with out the spiting part

  25. york8 said,

Whahahahah! Thank you Nick! You’re the perfect example of someone who has been media-brainwashed! Plus you contradiced yourself!

    ~Marlowe

  26. Max said,

I think that flag burning should not be allowed, and should be protected because
any patriotic or religious smybol represents who you are where you are from
and also it is violating other peoples beliefs who decides what we protect and when!!!

  27. york8 said,

ok then, so was it alright to destroy lslamic mosques in Afganistan and Iraq?

    ~Marlowe

  28. nick said,

oh yeah i forgot to add if you burn the flag you should leave this country because you clearly hate America and every one in it so much you chose to difile what what represents America and all Americans you should move and get away from such a horible place but i also forgot that your to scaird that you will lose your rights and your meals that you love so much you won’t leave the country that you hate so much in fear of loseing your meals while you live in your moms basement

  29. Fazal said,

I believe burning the American flag is wrong and should be protected because the flag represents our democracy, freedom and liberty. And I think that other religious symbols should be also protected as well because it show each countries beliefs and if we burned like the Koran it wouldn’t mean much to Americans, but would mean al lot to other people. Just as we believe in the American flag. Also if we start burning other religious symbols like the Bible, the Star of David, or the Koran it would start bringing violence or will bring chaos all over the world!!!!

  30. Elizabeth said,

I agree with Nick. The flag represents America. And if you burn it you CLEARLY hate America. People in this country take everything for granted. Yes we do have Freedom of Speech/Expression and what do people do with that Freedom they go and burn the American flag. People need to learn how to respect their country. The flag stands for everything that this country has stood for over the past 230 years. Think about it the stripes stand for the 13 original colonies and the stars represnt the 50 states. If you burn the flag you burn all those things.

  31. pete said,

I believe that flag burning should be illegal and should not be protected by freedom of speech. The only time anyone should ever burn the flag is when the flag is dropped to the ground, by accident! The U.S flag is a piec of america and should not be destroyed as a result of freedom of speech. Another thing is, that when you burn the flag it is not talking it is burning which is not speech and you should not be aloud to do it.

  32. Dani said,

nick but what if you cant leave i mean we all have the right to protest and free speach
nick there are probably hundreds of flags being burned a day there are like 4335495742903 made a day and sold in those ugly little tourist shops

  33. york8 said,

Marlowe, you need to stop insulting people! It’s okay if you don’t like Nick’s comment, but you don’t need to insult him to tell him that. I can’t tell if you feel strongly on this subject, or if you just want to be mean. Calm down, my friend. :I

elizabeth you are buring a flag not america, if it was so terrible to do that wouldnt you think that it would be iilegal?

I personally try to respect the American flag because I love our country. I can see how some people would want to burn it, so I don’t have much of a problem with people expressing that. Even if someone does take burning the flag as an insult,
GUESS WHAT? THERE WILL ALWAYS BE MEANIES AND DISRESPECTFUL PEOPLE, everywhere you go.
I think people should be able to shake the flag burning off. As long as they dont hurt people physically, we should be able to live with it.

  39. bill johnson said,

  47. John said,

hey Marlowe just cuase nick has a difrent opion then you dosen’t mean he’s brianwashed you should argue with him instead of calling him brainwashed

  48. Marlowe said,

John, aside from calling my opinons and arguments stupied and misspelling, I’m still waiting for you to pose a good argument. As for Nick, his opinions are the ones cirulated by the media and the current adminastration. I name what I see.

  49. Elizabeth said,

Marlowe, you spelt stupid wrong so I would not be talking about John misspelling.

  50. John said,

first of all marlowe I have not once said your opions are stupid but to nick they might not be media cirulated. So you shouldn’t be calling him the brainwashed take a look at your self and the way your talking to people with a diffrent opion

  51. york8 said,

Its ‘yourself’, there should be a period or comma after brainwashed. Not to mention the lack of punctuation and capitalization. Aside from the grammatical assault on the English language: I read the wrong comment, my bad, you didnt call my comments stupid. And yes, I’m sure I’m totally brainwashed for posing my own thoeries an opinions.

    ~Marlowe

  52. John said,

No thats not what i said is (thanks for insalting me) I’m not saying your opinions are brainwashed you shouldn’t call nick brainwashed just becuase you don’t agree with him,and I’m sorry I don’t read the Dictionary before I go to bed

Marlowe–I totally agree with you. This is how America runs, if you feel the need to burn a flag and for good reason do it. As for the rest of you, I’ll leave the country once you figure out what freedom means,oh wait that will be never!

    Bill says:
Marlow, your opinoins are wrong and well… stupid.

Yeah bill about that-first lets try to spell MARLOWE right and second lets not call ideas stupid–Marlowes comments are the most patrotic comments on this blog becasue they are the true ones. Nothing fancy smancy and he knows the true meaning of freedom unlike the rest of you.

    Andrew

  54. John said,

Andrew you should learn to spell. His comment are anything but PATROTIC!

  55. york8 said,

Thank you Andrew! And my comments ARE patriotic. I want the best for america!I want it to be truely free! I want us to be a true free government, not just a dictatorship goverened by money, fear and an anarcic symbol!

Alright guys. I am thrilled that we are now all obsessed with spelling but please, this is a blog not an english class. What exactly is the definition of “Patriotic” any ways? Loving America? Supporting it? How can we really tell what is patriotic and what’s not?
patriotic |ˌpātrēˈätik| adjective having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country :

Is that for everything in the country, I wonder…

If you’re patriotic, do you have to support everything?

One good reason: It wasn’t the tallest in the country anyways. Yes, there were many deaths in the attack. But sending our troops oversees is killing even more! Now not onle are hundreds dead, but thousands. It makes no sense. Again, who’s fault is it that the other countries are pissed? hmmm?

I think that flag burning should not be legal. One reason is that it is our national symbol. It represents our freedom, our fallen soldiers, and our country. When you burn the flag it is sooooo disrespectful. It is like a slap in the face for for all the veterens that faught for our freedom. If you hate america so much that you want to burn the flag why don’t you move. If you really feel the need to burn the flag go to the boarder of Mexico or Canada and do it, don’t do it in our country!

  93. Cong said,

Forget about the arguing and talk about the flag burning jeez..
I personally don’t care about the flag burning it’s the freedom of speech
if some person decided to burn the flag on their property which may make people

  94. Matt said,

John, your comment was 4 words also….

If somebody is injured due to the flag being burned, there could be a problem. But if no one is injured, it is only emotions that are affected. Expressing your free speech and making people mad should not be illegal.

  105. Dani said,

I THINK FLAG BURNING IS WRONG BECAUSE THAT YOU WOULD BE BURNING ONE OF THE THINGS THE SOLDIERS ARE FIGHTING FOR! AND TO ME IT JUST DOESN’T SEEM RIGHT!!!

  128. Andrew said,

Sheldon—– You can’t type in all caps. It is extremely annoying.

I was said that you cna burn the flag as long as you don’t start a riot and it is your property. That answer your question Sheldon?

  129. Dani said,

ok travis but it isnt just the colors, it what it means
    is burning a swastika ok?
    how about the bible?
i think the flag should be treated just as any other symbol.

  130. Dani said,

    i agreed andrew.

    Xp

  131. Dani said,

sheldon, mr clifford also said that you cant type in all caps so….

  132. John said,

  133. Dani said,

i think that people should certainly be able to burn the flag. for one thing, its free speech, which is protected, and second, its just a cloth on a stick! i mean come on, why does a certain symbol deserve so much attention and protection! if you ask me, its kinda silly.

ok i cant belive this but i agree yeah it very important to our contry but it is kinda…”silly” to fret over one flag, how come nobodys freting over the gay flag or anything else?

  139. John said,

To me the swasticka is a symbol of evil.

  140. Max said,

But the swasticka’s orginally means peace and it was adopted by the nazi party. If the nazis used the american flag as it’s symbol would you still think about it the same way?

  141. Dani said,

but john the swastika was origanally a symbol of peace in the asia area but hitler flipped it around so we automaticly think hitler.
maybe to some countries whne they see our flag they think evil.
when i see a canadian flag all i can thinkl about is how it isnt even a real country and how disgusting the chineese food there is……
    gah

  142. Max said,

    Canada is a real country

  143. Dani said,

  144. Dani said,

ok well if i burned a canadian flag no one would care butif i burned a american flag everyone would flip the hell out!!

    i dont get it?

    gah!!

  145. Max said,

Most people wouldn’t really care if we burned a canadian flag in America but if we were in Canada people would probaly care.

  146. york8 said,

Here’s a bit of useless history:

Originally, the swastika was called the manji, and it could be seen on Buddha’s hands, feet, and stomach. It meant peace, love and enlightenment. Google manji for a good picture. It looked like a swastika, only it was in a sqaure shape instead of a diamond.
It could point either way. Hitler and the Nazis then took it and reversed it and it’s meaning. (Literally and figuratively.)

  147. Dani said,

  152. york8 said,

    Canada rocks!!!!!!!!!

But ok—–The swastika (sp?) is just as bad as burning a flag. If you go to germany nad go to some persons house that suports the Nazi’s and leave a burning swastika (sp?) on thier doorstep, it’s no dofferent than leaving a burning flag on someones doorstep. So what im saying is that burn your own flag yeah fine, burn your own flag but leave it on someones doorstep-very wrong.

    Andrew

  153. John said,

Not really becuase swasticka repreasents evil.

  154. Dani said,

    whhatttt?

ok clear that up for me ok?

ok well if you leave a buring anything on someones door step then their house can catch fire and then you will get yelled at for burning and flag and get put in jail for killing someone!

maxie- canadians in quebec speak french and quebec is closest to us so……..

  155. Dani said,

    john no it doesnt

so i could go and draw a swastika on my hand and say oh it menas evil??

    it deosnt work that way!!

  156. Max B said,

Also there is a difference betwwen burning the flag in your backyard and going up to somone’s house, who you know is very pro-american, and burning a flag.

  157. york8 said,

Actully the buring of a falg on someone elses proprety is illegal, so youed go to jail anyway. And a buring flag, probably wouldent get hot enough to burn down a house.

  158. Max B said,

yeah i know french is a popular laguage in canada but why did you say they would be like bonjour

  159. Dani said,

    who is york8?????

can we please just use our real names??

    fire fire fire

    burn burn burn

  160. Elizabeth said,

That is very different Andrew. The swasticka represents a group of people who made millions of people suffer.

  161. Dani said,

because that is hello in french……….

    duhh

  162. Andrew said,

Ok but you at least have to understand where im coming from. Ok so not leaving it on thier doorstep but doing it right outside their hoouse so you know that they are watching.

  163. york8 said,

  170. Dani said,

    im so confused!!

  171. Sheldon said,

I think that if you burn a swastika it is not the same as burnig a flag because the swastika represents something veeeeerrrrrrrryyyyyy evil and sadistic!

    -Tristan

  173. Emma said,

They are both symbols all the same. To Nazi’s that symbol is sacred, and to some americans the flag is sacred. So why does it make a differrance?

  174. Barb said,

    MEANIES!
Obviously, I hate the swastika, but we can’t point fingers on what’s sacred and not, you know what i mean, guys?

  175. Dani said,

i know that the swastika does make you thnk if evil, but still it is a symbol and should be treated just as any other!

    gah.

  176. John said,

no it shouldent becuase it is EVIL and even the NAZI’S know that

  177. Andrew said,

OK I hate the swastika. But it’s not differnet. America has made many people suffer. Look at out history—slaves, women, and even now–families that have people over seas and we are keeping them over there. So burning a swastika is the same as burning a flag.

  178. Andrew said,

Right on Dani-if you can burn one symbol, then you should be able to burn another.

  179. John said,

America isn’t the only the country that had slaves Andrew.

  180. Dani said,

well yes but even thought it is evil, it should be treated like any other symbol.
like i said, somebody could look at the american flag and shudder and think ahhhh

  181. Dani said,

    amen andrew

    = P

  182. Dani said,

ok well what if a you burned a swastika in front of a nzi?
is that a bad thing. even thought what they belive in is horrible, they should still have the same rights as everyone else!!

    gah.

  183. Tyler K said,

I agree Dani, except I’d shoot the nzi first, then burn it, if I was that rude, or mean which I would never do.

  184. Andrew said,

Well yeah dani that would be bad–but i didn’t say that—i said some one that agree’s with what the Nazi’s

  185. Dani said,

    ?
    ok this is getting confusing!

tyler shooing someone is murder so…………….

    gah

  186. Sheldon said,

  215. dani said,

  216. Sheldon said,

    no

  217. john said,

Dani what are you trying to say?

  218. Barb said,

Dani, you probably couldn’t wear the swastika because it violate the Maine and U.S. civil rights law and/or act. It’s anti-semitism, which is racist (or predjudiced), so you couldn’t wear it at school. I dunno about just on the streets though. (it’d be HIGHLY unadvisable as Andrew said) gah.

  220. dani said,

ok well do you think that i could get in more trouble for wearing a shirt that says f*ck or a shirt with a swastika

  221. Andrew said,

A shirt with a swastika dani. You’d get in much more trouble with a swastika on it–and a lot of counciling-f*** will just get you suspended
swastika will get you suspended and hours of conciling (what does this have to do with flag burning? oh well)

  222. dani said,

im saying is it worse to wear a swastika or have a shirt that says f*ck on it?

    well i just was wondering….

ok stop it its not annoying to me its childish to keep pionting out that i say and type it.
well does anybody have an answer to my question if me buring a flag had no meaning besides to make people mad, and i still a “unpatriotic” person?

    GAH.

  241. Aknot said,

“well does anybody have an answer to my question if me buring a flag had no meaning besides to make people mad, and i still a “unpatriotic” person?”

You miss the point of the flag and what it means to a LOT of people. first and foremost it is a symbol of our freedoms and rights as Americans.

A lot of people have put their life one the line for that “symbol”. Have lost loved ones, and friends for that “symbol”.

To ask “if me buring a flag had no meaning besides to make people mad, and i still a “unpatriotic” person?” you have to first ask yourself this… why are you doing it? To make the person mad? Why not just spit in THEIR face. Why take a symbol which YOU KNOW is dear to more then that person and destroy it?

Attacking a symbol of many is just that. You are attacking those that believe in that symbol not just the one person you are trying to make mad.

  242. Caitlin said,

Although burning the flag may upset people, it is something our constitutional democracy allows.

  243. John said,

I think we should kill any one who burns the flag.

  244. Caitlin said,

That’s not the voice of democracy, what you are suggesting there is that America should become a dictatorship. If this happened why would it matter anymore if the flag was burned, because then it would no longer stand for freedom, and everything you say it stands for.

  245. Aknot said,

“Although burning the flag may upset people, it is something our constitutional democracy allows”

There is a lot of things our Constitution “allows” but there are things that anyone with an iota of common sense knows is “wrong” and not to do it….

So why is it “illegal” to yell Bomb or even mention the word bomb on a plane/airport? Yet burning a flag is protected under our Constitutional Democracy? It has the same effect. It causes a reaction in people that may hurt or injure another.

  246. Caitlin said,

Burning the flag doesn’t put people in danger like yelling bomb does, that’s the difference. Saying there is a breach in security in the airport is different than making a political statement by burning a symbol.

  247. John said,

I’d rather see them light them selves on fire then the flag.

  248. york8 said,

Thats sick John, the flag is worth more than a life?

    ~Marlowe

  249. Caitlin said,

Great to know John, but that has absolutely nothing to do with anything at all.

  250. Aknot said,

I beg to differ Caitlin. Take an American flag to the next 4th of July Celebration. Or maybe even a Veterans day gathering. Get oh lets say about 10 people that “want” and think its ok to burn the American Flag and are willing to defend that right.

Then do it. Lets see what happens.
(please dont do this.. Im just using it as an example)

The word Bomb in an airport means “nothing”. However in any context you are not allowed to say it…. But what about my COnstitutional rights? Why cant I say “Shes the bomb” to some attractive young lady that walks by…

Cause it falls under that iota of common sense……

  251. John said,

Yes the flag is worth more then 1000 lifes.

  252. dani said,

The word Bomb in an airport means “nothing”. However in any context you are not allowed to say it…. But what about my COnstitutional rights? Why cant I say “Shes the bomb” to some attractive young lady that walks by…

ok well if i go in a airnport and yell “BOMB” at the top of my lungs then yell nothing i would get in alot more trouble then burning a flag…and i highly doubt that somebody would say shes the bomb to an attractive young lady who walks by they would saysome obscene comment on her body. Saying bomb in an airport can send the airport into mass chaos…so lets go and try it now

    gah

  253. Aknot said,

And burning an American flag at one of the places I mentioned wont?

As for the comment to a young lady Im using it as an example. Yes any mention of the word “bomb” in any context in an airport CAN and WILL get you in trouble.

Dont get me wrong I would never do it. Nor would I burn an American flag or any other symbol that a group of people believe in. That is just asking for trouble. You are doing nothing to that group or that individual. Wanna hurt someone? Take it out on them. Not the symbol of 999 other people you dont even know. That is the ONLY reason people do it. To ellicit a reaction from a GROUP of people.

Also are you going to address the answer I posted with regards to your question? ;)

How bout what it stands for? Is that worth someones life?

  258. dani said,

    but yet it is
andrew he is not stupid and niave
i can say that about you because i dont agree with you saying that about him and the flag
i think thta we should be able to burn the flag but what about all the people who
*DIED* to protect what it means??
    *DIED*

    gah.

  259. Andrew said,

no Aknot it really isn’t–the flag is cloth tat represtents america

Dani–correction the swastika is cloth–if youve hever seen one or read aobut them

How does that make me sick just cause I think the flag is worth lives??
so everybody who burns a flag should be killed? how about everbody you wears glass, or has braces or likes hockey, should they all be killed too?

  267. John said,

    I think it’s worth 100 lives a star!

  268. Aknot said,

So you are saying that anything that represents America is not worth human life…
“the flag is cloth tat represtents america”

What about the soldier that represents America? The Statue of Liberty? Washington Monument?

So its ok to just destroy those things to show you are not (not you) happy with someones beliefs or views?

I see what you are saying… then instead of burning the flag why not burn a pillow case? Because it does not have the same symbolism as the flag and will not generate the same response….

this is your most stupid and niave comment yet— The flag is not worth someones life

no Aknot it really isn’t–the flag is cloth tat represtents america
the swastika is cloth that represents nazi
neither them is worth someones life

    !HYPOCRITE!

  270. John said,

I never said that this is about flags not stupid hockey.

  271. Andrew said,

    i was just saying
that if you kill everybody who burns a flag should die then every budist and every person who burns a bible and anybody who does anything!

And im not a hypocrite dani!!!!
    I didn’t contridict myself!
i just said what ive said the whole time

I see what you are saying… then instead of burning the flag why not burn a pillow case? Because it does not have the same symbolism as the flag and will
    not generate the same response….
That’s not what im saying im jsut saying that it is ok to burn the flag GOD!

  272. Andrew said,

Oh yeah John if you kill everybody that has burn a flag
    please kill me first

  273. dani said,

yes you did you said first its not worth a life then you said it did so which one is it?
    ok then……..

  274. Aknot said,

“That’s not what im saying im jsut saying that it is ok to burn the flag GOD!” And I am saying it is not. It is not “OK” to burn the symbol of anyone. Period. the only thing you are doing when you do this is attempting to get a reaction.

If you “hate” America and what it stands for…. leave…. live in a remote area, stand up and make change. But dont stoop to a tatic that only creates more problems.

  275. dani said,

agreed but yet some of us cant leave this country, like us teens….so that is a problem so umm
    gah

  276. Aknot said,

I suggested 2 other recourses. one you didnt point out, you only chose the one that “works” for you…so ummm

Yup and you must abide by the laws that govern you. If you want them changed speak up do something about them, come up with something better. If not bide your time when you do become of age and can “legally” do what you please and leave.

Once you find this perfect Utopia you will be leaving for drop me a line im dying to know where it is.

  277. Andrew said,

If you “hate” America and what it stands for…. leave…. live in a remote area, stand up and make change. But dont stoop to a tatic that only creates more problems.

ok ill leave the minute you figure out what freedom is–wait for you nad John-that will be never

  278. Aknot said,

Freedom is what you percieve it to be. I cant tell you what freedom is. Hence the reason “if you dont like it leave it” is such a good phrase. I like what I have here. Perfect? No but I believe its the best thing going in the free world.

You dont? Fine. Change it… or well… leave it. Dont stand on a soapbox and just complain.

  279. Andrew said,

You know-i don’t have to change it because its not a law-it is perfectly legal to burn a flag! so you change it and not complain!

  280. Aknot said,

“so you change it and not complain!”

    Andrew,

    Im trying. ;)

Not only am I prior service I support vets and active service members I also make sure my voice and opinion is heard when I can with issues I believe strongly in. This being one of them.

  281. Andrew said,

Well that’s very good but why change the law–do you want us to live in fear of what would happen if we didn’t have freedom?

  282. Emma said,

Andrew, rephrase the question. Absolutely confusing me there.

The American Flag is a symbol, yes. But it means something different to everyone. To you, “Aknot,” it may be a symbol of freedom. Correct me if I’m wrong when I say this, that the definition of freedom is; “the condition of being free; the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints.” I don’t think there are many other ways to interpret this from how it is written. Being unable to burn the flag, a symbol despised by some, IS imposing restraints. You can be against people that burn the flag, and voice your opinions as you are, but no one should have to leave their country or be forced to compromise because they do not agree with your opinion.

    :)

  283. nick said,

but complet freedom is dagerius there is no and should neaver be complet freedom for you could do anything and is not very safe by imposing restraints you make everything less dargerius and burning a flag is dangerius you could set your clothing a flame or you could start a riot or you could get some one *!@#ed off and you could get badly hurt.

  284. Aknot said,

hmmm Let me try to answer that….

First off define “freedom”. Not an internet definition but what you think freedom is.

Now for why I want the law changed. Like many others its not just a piece of material. The American flag (and anyone elses flag for that matter) is a symbol.

This particular symbol is held dear to me. Ive had a friend die and a friend badly injured for this flag. Ive put my life on the line for this flag. As have thousands upon thousands before me.

(not looking for a sob story just letting you know)

Now yes it is your “right” to burn that symbol. However dont you think a little respect is in order for why you have that right? Thats probably the biggest “beef” I have. People say well Ive got the right to do it.. How do you think you got that right? Yup people standing up for and fighting for that symbol you have the right to burn.

So no I dont think I would live in fear if this one “freedom” you speak of was lost. Your next question is “well where does it stop”? Well using a little common sense is all that is needed.

  285. Andrew said,

    Nicley put emma!!!
    I totally agree!

Aknot–freedom is to speak out against politics to show that you hate them

Therefore LEAVE ME ALONE!–i am right!~

  286. Aknot said,

“Therefore LEAVE ME ALONE!–i am right!~” That statement alone proves you are wrong. You may think your opinion is best for you, but there is no right or wrong here… ;) Also Andrew I dont consider the American Flag “political”.

So Emma what you are saying is that there are no restraints within our society today? People are free to come, go and do as they please?

I hate to burst your “freedom” bubble but I do not have “the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints.”

Splitting hairs? You darn right. Dont throw up a “text book” definition of something you cant back up.

As Nick said you cant have a society with “complete” freedom. Your freedom and my freedom may be two different things along with Andrews view of freedom.

Here is the question im dying to hear answered…. Why? Why burn the flag? Why would anyone want to “upset” even just one person by doing this?

Thats like wearing an SS outfit to a Holocoust museum. Thats like wearing a Klan outfit to a Martin Luther King parade.

While you may have the “freedom” to do it, it just doesnt seem right does it?

Now do any of you have a problem with a group of people allowed to walk into the Holocust museum in DC wearing full SS uniforms? Would you support their “right” to do that? When I mean “support” I mean go to a website and speak out on their behalf?

There are quite a few other scenerios I could probably list. If I knew each and every one of you a little better I BET I could come up with a topic that you would say “but you cant do that”.. and my answer would be, but hey I got the right…..

Just cause you got the right doesnt mean it is. Hence the reason there are laws in place now. Hence the reason there should be a law in place. (Again not just the American Flag.. )

  287. Sheldon said,

    Good point!

  288. Barb said,

Well, meanies come and go. We can’t stop them from stating what they wish. We can correct them, sure, but Aknot, freedom is a bit more than respect for everyone. (as important as it is) At least I think it is. As you said, everyone has a different definiton of freedom, which is why burning the flag should be allowed. We don’t know everyone’s views. But sometimes people got to suck it up, or show people and tell people why you disagree and how innapropriate you think it is.

  289. Aknot said,

    Barb,

More harm then good…. Letting people burn the symbol of thousands or preventing people from doing it?

Sometimes you have to take the lesser of two evils. Ive told you why I agree it SHOULDNT be burned. The only “reason” people have been giving to burn it is cause its “their right”…

You want to show your stance on George Bush? Burn his picture. You dont like “America” boycott it. You wanna piss off people you dont even know and show your inability to grasp the concept of what that flag stands for burn it. You are burning the exact symbol of what gives you the “right” to burn it… Kind of Hypocritical aint it?

  290. john said,

I think it’s a BIG DISGRACE to burn the flag. You burning the flag is showing all the men and women over seas that you hate them. How? Well because there fighting to keep you rights and freedom. FREEDOM isn’t FREE

  291. john said,

Burn the flag? I think burn yourself. If I see someone burning the flag I want to say “Light youself on fire”. By buring the blag there disrespecting the troops defending this country from the Anti-Americans(terrorists). If you burn the flag why don’t you just go over their and burn it with them becuase your no better then them.

  292. Andrew said,

But doesnt that go against my “rights”?

  294. $~*NiMO*~$ said,

I say that burning the flag should be illegal because you should show some respect to the country that you live in…. but i also say that other symbols like the bible or the quran, should be protected more than the flag is. because they are religious symbols and they mean a lot to the people who practice that religion. “America” is not really a religion…LOL. But you should atleast show “some” respect to your countries flag. and not burn it….. i really on both sides actually…… i don’t know.

Well John, if you decided to kill 100 people for every flag burned-you wouyld end up killing more people that have been killed in the war–and why should I burn myself if I am standing up for my rights.

And Aknot-yeah it is against your rights, but President Bush is bull and has no idea what he is doing.

and Barb- nicely put you are totally correct.

  297. john said,

    john,
Don’t you think that if you lit someone on fire for burning the flag you are being hypocritical? You aren’t showing that you’re patriotic, you are being a criminal, and your standing up for our country in a horrible way. Look, if two people disagree on if the American flag should be burned, and the “patriotic” guy burns him, doesn’t that make HIM the fool?
It’s both irrational and ironic that you would do that, because then what are you standing up for?
That’s not making a point, it’s wasting lives. If you’re for the war in Iraq, and are trying to show you are supportive, why say that a life isn’t important. The people risking their lives will question why it’s worth it.

That’s just plain disrespectful. But, neverless, they can do it. People don’t need to change the constitution to try to keep respect around.

Its kind of a random symbol, isnt it? I mean, if we wanted to make peopel mad, we could have some kind of symbol with a puritan base to it. That’s how a big chunk of americans woulve wanted it, back in the 1700s. Then it was a flag, maybe in the future people will want a pic of some leader to be a symbol representing freedom.
Symbols arent the real thing, remember? If someone was burning veterans, that would be way worse, which even you anti- flag burners must admit.
A flag…well to some it may represent people dying for this great nation. For me, its a mere piece of cloth.
So, do we need a silly little argument about it?

Thanks Andrew, I’m sure I would. But 13 year olds can’t be elected and I don;t have some super weapon or plan to have a hostile takeover of the government, so I’ll just wait.

You are burning the exact symbol of what gives you the “right” to burn it… Kind of Hypocritical aint it?

ok well he does make a REALLY good point.

in a way hes totally right

  397. Andrew said,

but in a way he is totatlly wrong

  398. ..::♥Nimo♥::.. said,

I think if people hate america enough to burn a flag…then i think they should just move to another country….whats the point of living here anywayz??

and if you hate america because of a law or something.. then I suggest they sign petitions or write to the government so they can do something about it…..whats burning the flag gonna do?!?

    peace

  399. Elizabeth said,

    exactly!

  400. Barb said,

    Aknot or danis dad,
You say “boycott america” but that seems quite hypocritical…because don’t you see? Boycotting america IS burning the flag!J
Just because it “pisses people off”, does not change what it is.You’re not burning the idea, you’re burning cloth.
Our country was founded by “pissing people off”. Just think of the Boston tea party! I mean, our country was started by “we the people” giving our opinions….right from the start.
So I wouln’t consider it unconstitutional to do so!

  401. york8 said,

    Good point Barb

And to change a law you have to have have a petition with 2 million names on it-one fifth of A
    America

    Andrew

  402. dani said,

    ahhhhhhhhh!!
we are teenagers we cant move out of the country!!

  403. york8 said,

Well technicaly…we can. However I can tell you if the draft is reinstated I’ll be in Cape Town South Africa! DUAL-CITIZENSHIP!

    ~Marlowe

  404. dani said,

ok marlowe go get a fricken plane ticket and go move to like, africa see how easy it is

  405. york8 said,

Umm for the record I have African citizenship, so whatever. I can just leave when I want. Head to Cape Town, settle down im my dad’s home town, away from Americ, and drafts and bombs. Sounds close to heavan.

    ~Marlowe

  406. york8 said,

Really Marlowe? That’s really cool. We can’t be drafted til we are 18 so if the war is still going on then then I’ll move to Canada because they give gifts when we cross the boarder. :)

    Andrew

  407. dani said,

ok well marlowe i really could care less if you had a citezenship for mars

im just saying that if you move to a different country then you could live a harder life and have less rights

    gah

  408. Marlowe said,

I was talking inreference to the topic, Dani, and South Africa has pretty much the exact same consituiton and bill of rights as the US just better with more freedom.

  409. ..::♥Nimo♥::.. said,

if you hate america because of a law or something.. then I suggest they sign petitions or write to the government so they can do something about it…..whats burning the flag gonna do?!? yeah putting all your anger on a piece of cloth will really change what you’re mad at better…….lol

  410. york8 said,

No one hates the flag. Its a protest, a sign that someone is unsatisfied with the government.

    ~Marlowe

  411. ..::♥Nimo♥::.. said,

Yeah but if you are unsatisfied with the governament you should do something about it that will actually change something….burning the flag doesn’t do anything. What does the government have to do with the flag? the flag represents “AMERICA”… not just the government.

  412. york8 said,

Nimo, bruning the flag is a public protest which incites people to make a difference. Its faster and more immediate then a petition. It accomplishs the same thing.

    ~Marlowe

  413. Elizabeth said,

A petition is way more effective. If you and your buddies go out and burn the flag The Congress would not go “oh look 4 kids from Portland, ME just burnt the flag lets change the law” if you do a petition then it will show intelligence and that you actually care about the country.

  414. john said,

Marlowe if you can move you don’t you.

  415. Barb said,

wow guys we need a new topic. We’re stuck on the “does it help” topic and we’re at a stalemate.
Elizabeth, the people aren’t neccisarraly trying to change a law. If you dont agree w/the flag burners, then voice you’re opinion to them. Why change one of our first law just so people dont get ticked off…for a while?

  416. ..::♥Nimo♥::.. said,

yeah i agree with elizabeth… if you want the government to do something about the law you are aginst then PETITION!! if you just burnt the flag your case will not be taken seriously… but if you do it more formerly it would be taken more seriously. for example if the mayor or president is patriotic and loves america….you burning the flag will just get him angry and trust me he will most likely not try his best to change that law….

all im saying is show respect to the government and the government will respect you back!!!!

    peace ♥ ~^-♥-^~

  417. york8 said,

Well trust me im starting a petition now
It’s entilted “Help stop John and others from letting us be patriotic!”
    Anyone want to sign?

    Andrew

  418. dani said,

    ha!
    nimo proved my point

its just a piece of cloth!!

    ha! and HA!

  419. John said,

Andrew the only people who will sign is you and Marlowe

  420. york8 said,

Yeah. But Nimo, you just said basicly that it doesnt matter if the flag is burned, but you have been saying thats its an improtant symbol, care to elaborate?

    ~Marlowe

  421. Andrew said,

    Really Nimo-you are being hypicritical

  422. Elizabeth said,

Well trust me im starting a petition now
It’s entilted “Help stop John and others from letting us be patriotic!”
    Anyone want to sign?

    Andrew

me: so you want a petition to stop John from letting you be patriotic…wouldn’t that be a dictatorship?

  423. dani said,

    what the heck?

marlowe you are being a huge jerk by doing that

    hel-lo?

    freeeedom blog?
    hes not stoping you either
    unless you let him
so if he does its your fault

  424. Andrew said,

No it wouldn’t be a dictatorship Elizabeth.

and good point dani (even though it is just saying i’m wrong)

  425. Elizabeth said,

can you tell me what your petition means it doesn’t make sense

  426. Emma said,

    Look.
John and Marlowe may have different opinions from you guys, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a right to say what they want even if you disagree with them. It’s not only those two, either.
I do have to say that most of the comments from Marlowe are simply dissing people instead of expressing difference in opinion. If there was anything we should make, it shouldn’t be a petition, but just an idea of respect for each other.

    Crazy, I know.

  427. Caitlin said,

Actually, it wouldn’t be a dictatorship to pass a law so that it is illegal to infringe on someone’s right to free speech, symbolic included. (Funny, I was under the impression that we already had a law that said just that. I believe it was called the Bill of Rights, but, I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong.)

  428. Barb said,

    yeah, nicely put.
I mean, there may be arguing on the blog, but its way better than everybody agreeing. People say that its boring, so that kind of discussion si saving it.

  429. Andrew said,

    very true barb

  430. Mia said,

Can we get back to the flag burning

  431. Andrew said,

Yeah-we are branching off into things about flag burning

  432. dani said,

i think that people in america arent using their rights, they just say they have them and thats it…we need to start using them

  433. nick said,

wiat a minute marlowe how is john and other people stoping you from being patriotic and dani up a little ways you said the flag is a peace of cloth well you are right but answer me this wut does it represent…well i will tell you it represents america the people who live in america every thing that has to do with america so it may be a peace of cloth but next time you call the flag just a peace of cloth and that goes for every one just look at this comment and see what the flag really not just a peace of sloth

  434. nick said,

    i meant cloth my bad

  435. Barb said,

    Nick,
    Sloth? haha
Ok. Well, to YOU it represents america. This has been said. But….you cant change how other people think of it. If they want to burn it, dang it, they can! It just is ticking you off it seems, and you are saying that all the other citizens of america cant?

  436. nick said,

of cource its been said i said it like twice before… i like saying the same things over so people think its new because they forget i keep saying it so i allways have somthing to say so HA

  437. york8 said,

I ment that John is, by defending the flag, taking away my American rights, and there for I can’t be a true American *national anthem plays in the backround*

    ~Marlowe

  438. Barb said,

Its wonderful that you LIKE talking….but ok, i doubt people are forgetting YOUR opinion on flag burning. I just dont see why every one in the US has to be polite to people who find it offensive.

  439. John said,

yep thats right Marlowe I’m causeing you not to be partiotic ture yep. Whatever makes you sleep a night.

  440. nick said,

wait let me get this straight john is defending the flag (and the flag represents us and our rights by the way) is taking away your rights so not defending the flag from being set a flame is taking away your ability to be a true american????? so burning the flag the thing that represents our rights and represents we the people of the United States of America is making it so you can be a true american are not true americans patriotic or have i been living in a happy fairy land that is full of happy bunnys and unicorns and in the i was there the consept of being true to ones counrty has change and any ways i don’t think burning the flag is very patriotic marlowe.

  441. John said,

    Marlowe did I just spam?

  442. nick said,

opps i weant and in the time i was there

  443. dani said,

    wth marlowe??

how is he taking away your american rights?!?!
i do not see in any way shape or form that hes taking away any of your rights….

  444. york8 said,

Prevention of burning a flag is a prevention of the use of American rights. Its not that difficult, andyone could understand. A 3rd grader could understand what I’m trying to say! Its so simple!

    ~Marlowe

  445. Carolyn and Caitlin said,

We get how preventing people from burning flags is an appalling restriction of our rights as U.S. citizens…

  446. John said,

I’M NOT STOPING YOU BEING PATRIOTIC you just can’t stand it if someone disagrees with you. SO MARLOWE TOUGH.

  447. dani said,

    i agree with john

    darling,
like i said hes not taking your right away unless you let him
he cant say ‘burning the flag is wrong and we shouldnt do it’ and that means he taking away your rights
like the beastie boys ones said:

‘YOU GOTTA FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT…”

    Just rememmber that part though…lol

    gah

  448. Barb said,

    haha good song..
That’s true that you have to let that said person take away your rights. I guess it all comes down to how much do we as a country care about our rights?
What would it take for someone to take them away?
